Austen Powers

Jane Austen’s powerful novels are as popular now as ever, with early editions attracting high prices any time they appear for sale.

A circa 1816 first edition of Emma in three volumes is being auctioned by Bonhams at their Knightsbridge, London premises on the 13th of November at their Books, Maps, Manuscripts and Photographs sale. Lot 13 carries an estimate of £6,000 – 8,000 (US$ 9,700 – 13,000).

Shortly thereafter, on the 21st of November, a set of Austen titles is coming up for auction at Christie’s Valuable Manuscripts and Printed Book sale in their rooms in King Street, London. Lot 150 comprises sixteen uniformly bound early editions including Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

The auction estimate for the set is £30,000 – £50,000 ($48,270 – $80,450).
