Sir Peter Lely, Queen Mary II, circa 1677.
On the 28th of December 1694 Mary II, wife and first cousin of joint monarch, William III, died from smallpox.
Raised a Protestant, Mary was the eldest daughter of (Roman Catholic) James II by his first wife Anne Hyde (born Anglican but converted to Catholicism after her marriage to James). Mary was the heiress to the English Crown, though she jointly deposed her father, James with her husband William in what came to be known as The Glorious Revolution.
