Furniture made by the celebrated eighteenth-century Scottish cabinetmakers, Young and Trotter is coming up for auction at Bonham’s Autumn Antique and Picture Sale in Edinburgh on the 16th of October, 2014.
The five lots comprise a mahogany and boxwood strung chest of drawers (lot 198), a mahogany bureau (lot 199), a mahogany Pembroke table (lot 200), a mahogany side table (lot 201) and a mahogany linen press (lot 202).

Explain (Faded) mahogany. Is it a natural fading or is it bleached?

The chest (lot 198) certainly looks as if it has been chemically bleached as the colour is just too even to have faded to that degree naturally. It does appear to have been subjected to hot and dry conditions as witnessed by the various splits, but if it were sun-bleached, then there would, at least, be tell-tale shadows under the overhang of the top and beneath the bails.
Bleaching mahogany was done (it bleaches very easily) however I don’t know if Young and Trotter were proponents of the fashion. Of course, the chest may have been subsequently bleached.

It will be interesting to see how the bureau does. The estimate is high enough even being by this great maker but generally bureaus are making peanuts and this one has the disadvantage of not being the greatest proportions and being 3 drawer which never works as well as 3 plus 2.

I don’t know if the Edinburgh association will be enough to get it past the estimate. It is large and as you point out, not the most advantageous size or configuration. The timber is stunning though.
