I am appealing for any information about clockmaker Andrew Latter of Speldhurst in Kent. Of the two longcase clocks by Latter that I am aware of, both have brass dials with eight-day movements. One case is oak and the other black japanned (presumably on oak) and appear to date from the third quarter of the eighteenth-century.
Britten’s Old Clocks and Watches and their Makers makes no reference of Latter, though I haven’t had the opportunity to look him up in Baillie and Loomes’ Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World.
If any clockies read this blog and can shed any light on Andrew Latter I should be very grateful.

Thank you for the information Alan. The clock I have is in storage behind other furniture and I haven’t examined the movement yet, however I can see that it has gut lines.
I suppose it is possible that Latter could have been active for fifty years.

Well I might have the 3rd
Mine is a provincial oak cased 30hr version with posted movement and single hand. It is marked Andrew Latter, Speldhurst. Given it’s features I would give it a date of 1750 to 1760.
